Following the energetic first single, Consent, from the coming self-produced alt-pop LP, POPNOTPOP, Rookes offers Paint - a playful, sideways glance at romantic ambiguity and hook-up culture.
Developed while making musical loops in iOS apps, Paint navigates a kaleidoscope of feelings for a bisexual lover; showcasing Rookes’ dynamic vocal talent and incorporating bright marimbas, strings and flute arrangements reminiscent of Lizzo, Prince and Billie Eilish.
Fresh, sexy and catchy as hell, Paint is co-mixed with celebrated indie engineer Katie Tavini, and mastered via Tavini’s collective, Weird Jungle. The much-anticipated, HMUK grant-funded POPNOTPOP album will drop in November 2022.
I’m tired of kissing folx
I’m not in love with
New lips on my throat
Don’t solve this
I swear liked you better
Before you got with him
But I’ll tell you anything
You want to know
You know, I only sing
When I have something to say
And when I have something to say
You’ll find me singing
If I let you in
Why don’t you paint into me
The things you can see are missing
‘Cause I feel for you
But I liked you better
Before you got with him
And what I feel for you
Is only limitless
Yeah I feel for you
But I like it better
When we’re skin on skin
Yeah I feel for you
And there’s no end to us
Don’t lock me out
Because I missed a detail
Or because I paint with sound
Instead of colours now
Lipstick’s for wearing
When I’m not around
Even now you kiss me
Like I’m drowning
You know, I only sing
When I have something to say
And when I have something to say
You’ll find me singing
If I let you in
Why don’t you paint into me
The things you can see are missing
‘Cause I feel for you
But I liked you better
Before you got with him
And what I feel for you
Is only limitless
Yeah I feel for you
But I like it better
When we’re skin on skin
Yeah I feel for you
And there’s no end to us, no no no

Four more winners on this excellent release. Have loved 'Honey' from the first time I heard it, as there's plenty of passion and spirit in Sarah's awesome vocals. An EP of fast and slow contrasts that's always mesmerising. Michael Reilly
